Aquatic Habitat

Concept Explanation

Aquatic Habitat

Aquatic Habitat: The aquatic comprises all the water bodies on the planet. It is mainly of three kinds of fresh water, marine and coastal habitat.

Fresh Water:  Rivers, lakes ponds and streams are example of fresh water habitat. Due to the availability of water, the roots of aquatic plants are either absent or poorly - developed. Some of the plants living in fresh water bodies float freely on water. For example : Water hyacinth, lotus, Water lily. Some plants remain completely submerged in water. For eg : Hydrilla and Vallisenaria.

Marine habitat: Oceans and seas form the largest habitat on the planet. Fish, whale, shark, jellyfish. The body is streamlined. The streamlined shape of the body helps to overcome the resistance due to water and enable the fish to swim fast. The skin is covered with water proof scales.

Coastal Habitat- Coastal Habitat refers to the region where the land meets the sea. The coastal ecosystems occur where the land meets the sea  and that includes a diverse set of habitat types like the mangroves, coral reefs, seagrass beds, estuaries and lagoons, backwaters etc.

Estuaries:  Estuaries and their surrounding wetlands are bodies of water usually found where rivers meet the sea. Estuaries are home to unique plant and animal communities that have adapted to brackish water  - a mixture of fresh water draining from the land and salty seawater.

Lentic ecosystem : is the one which is consist of standing water such as lake and ponds or swamps and marshes, ditches etc. The word lentic means slow or motionless. Limnology is the study of inland waters - lakes (both freshwater and saline), reservoirs, rivers, streams, wetlands, and groundwater.

Lotic Ecosystem : has flowing waters. Examples include: creeks, streams, runs, rivers, springs, brooks and channels.

Coral Reefs: Coral reefs are rock like structures made from calcium carbonate secreted by corals. They are also called rain forests of the sea. Starfish, Octopus, sea urchins and a variety of fish are found in coral reefs.
